Fourth Castaway Voted Off

March 5th, 2009

The Bus Driver Voted Off

The 53 year old Sandy from Louisville, Kentucky was voted off episode four.  Sandy was surprised it was her, as she thought she was getting in tight with her tribe members.

Sandy had this to say, “I was the mother hen over all these little ducks and I stayed around a lot longer than I thought I was going to and I didn’t quit so I’m real proud of myself.

We will miss Sandy’s humor and can only say that it was too bad she never found her hidden immunity idol on the “sandy” beach.

3rd Episode Survivor Tocantins

February 26th, 2009

We Begin On Night 6

Night 6 at Timbira Tribe find Erinn saying she didn’t see it coming for her tribe to vote off Candace.  She is now in a panic, as she was attached to the hib of Candace for the last few days.  Coach also does not want Erinn in his alliance.

Timbira day 7 finding Jerry feeling sick for the last few days, and thinks it maybe was the beans or something he was eating that is causing his stomach to hurt real bad.  But, he doesn’t want to show any weakness to his tribe, and wants to be viewed as one of the stronger ones.

Jalapao day 7 is a fishing morning with the gear from winning the last challenge.  Using the net, they are having problems catching fish and they say they need to figure out a good system.  They were however able to fish with the pole and caught fish for a meal before the day’s challenge.

The Challenge was for 6 members from each tribe to be blind folded and tied together in pairs.  The remaining tribe member guides them through a maze to locate a bucket and make their way to a water tower to fill a bucket of water and race back to start to empty the water into a container that will raise a flag.  Next, they collect corn from another tower and fill the second container until that flag is raised.  The first tribe to fill both containers and raise both flags wins the rewards.

Jeff says, “want to know what you are playing for?”  The tribes are playing for an umbrella, chairs, pillows, blankets, and a hammock.  The winning tribe chooses one member from the loosing tribe to go to Exile island and that person will select someone from the winning tribe to join them.

The Timbira tribe fell way behind in the competition.  Blowing the challenge and allowing Jalapao to win the rewards.  Then Brendan, the 30 year old entrepreneur, choose Taj, the 37 year old former Pop Star, to join him at Exile Island.  Spencer was not shocked by the choice (same pair as last time).

Back at Timbira camp, Coach says “winners find a way to win, losers find a way to loose.  We got to get it together.”  Other comments from tribe were, “that sucked,” “we didn’t get beaten, we got humiliated.”  “It wasn’t even close.”  Tyson says, Coach wants his voice heard, which is what we all want and need.  Coach wants to vote off Erinn.  The Coach, Tyson, Sierra, and Debra are going to vote Erinn off next, per the Coach.

At Jalapoa camp, they celebrate victory.  Joe said it was awesome.  We could really do some damage if we win the next challenge.  He observed how pissed Coach was afterwards.  They then put their newly acquired tarp over their shelter to keep dry fro the next rain storm.

Exile Island we see they get another clue and shared it with each other.  It said the immunity idol was surrounded by wood (back at their respective tribes).  They have formed a secret alliance which will come into play after the merge.

The second challenge was for 2 members of each tribe to race to roll a large crate back to their starting mat.  Once the tribe has gathered all 6 crates, they must stack them to build a stair case that spells out their tribe’s name.  The first tribe to stack them correctly and get to the top of their tower wins immunity.

Jalapao ends up winning again, and receive the immunity.  The Timbira tribe must come back that night for tribal counsel and vote off one of their members.

Back at Timbira camp, Brendan finds his immunity idol and hides it under a rock nearby.  Jerry showed weakness in the challenge, and was still ill.  He could not eat beans for dinner again.  Erinn was glad that Jerry was sick, as it took her off the block, and put everyone on to Jerry for a possible eviction.  Jerry would not quit, no matter how bad he felt and said his tribe would have to vote him off before he would quit.

Jerry gets evicted at Tribal Council and said that this was one of his toughest experiences and hopes that one of his tribe members wins the million dollars.

Voted Off Third Castaway

February 26th, 2009

Our 1st Sergeant Jerry Is Voted Off

The 49 years old Jerry, from Rock Hill, South Carolina (1st Sergeant in the U.S. Army) is the third castaway to be voited off this season’s Survior Tocantins.

Jerry had been feeling sick for the last few days, and thinks it maybe was the beans or something he was eating that was causing his stomach to hurt real bad.  But, he doesn’t want to show any weakness to his tribe, and he wanted to be viewed as one of the stronger ones.

But it was too hard to hide this illness from his castaways, as his performance in the challenge was proof to his tribe’s members that he was truly sick.  Also evidence to his tribe was his laying down and resting, while not eating any beans and only a little bit of rice.

So Jerry ended up getting his whole tribe voting him off, unknown to him at Tribal Counsil.  But he also realized this was a strong possiblity because of his sickness.  We wish him well, and hope he now gets proper medical treatment.

Survivor Tocantins 2nd Episode

February 19th, 2009

The second show of the realty TV Survivor Tocantins opens up with Jalapao tribe back at camp the night of the first tribal council from the first show. Sandy is saying she thought Carolina played her cards terribly wrong . . . “I believe I am underestimated in this game.  I want to win this thing.’

The Jalapao castaways brought back fire from tribal council, so they were able to start their camp fire very easily.  Spencer said that Sandy would go next.  “Carolina was first to go, next will be Sandy.”

Joe said they need to have some protein in their diet, and suggested eating termites.  So the next morning they set out on a hike looking for mounds.  They found one, and they all were eating termites for breakfast. (Is the breakfast of champions?  Could be . . . read on.)

Over the Timbira Tribe, Sierra said she is still on the outs with her tribe, so she will most definitely need to find the hidden imunity idol.  But she needed help in doing so, and asked Brandan, the 30 year old Entrepreneur, for help.  Sierra said Brandan was the one person who didn’t vote for her, and he is the one that she trusted the most.  But they got close to getting caught digging on the beach, so Sierra then made up a story that that they were making a big fire pit on the beach for that night fall.  (The story seemed to have been accepted as truth to this gullible tribe.)

Later Coach and Candace argued about how to cook the rice and beans, as they should be cooked separately or not?  They both apologized later, with the Coach being a big flirt.  Candace said the Coach has an ego bigger than Brazil.

At Jalapao, they were saying everywhere is so muddy.  Then Taj admitted to being married to a Heisman Trophy winner and former Tennessee Titan running back Eddie George.  J.T. said he now thinks she has way more money than he does.

Second Challenge for this new Season!

The Challenge was for immunity, (“back up for grabs”).  They had to shoot a ball in the hoop, on a floor of water.  Three baskets would win it.  They were playing for fishing gear, and the winning tribe gets to send one castaway to Exile Island, where there was a clue to a hidden immunity idol.

The game was a lot of dirty fighting in the water.  Jalapao ended up winning with a final score of 3 to 2.  So they decided to send Brandan from Timbira to Exile Island.  But then Jeff read a twist to the game.  Brandan was asked to pick one castaway from the winning tribe of Jalapao, to join himself at Exile Island.  So he choose Taj.

Back at the Timbira tribe, Tyson thinks Sierra is numero uno on the chopping block.

At Jalapao, J.T. has been emerging as the Tribe leader.  He was very knowledgeable about how to use their new fishing gear. On Exile Island, there were 2 bottles, and each castaway had to choose one to open.  One bottle was empty, the other bottle contained to notes inside which Brandan read in private. A clue to the idol, and the 2nd note was a choice to switch tribes.  But Brandan said “no way.”

Back at Timbira, Candace was trash talking Coach to her fellow castaways, which got back to the Coach.  The Coach then said Candace was the bad apple in the camp.  Candace played a great physical game but on one wants a snake in the grass.

So this proved to be the down fall of Candace, as the Coach was able to strike back get everyone to vote her off.  He even told Sierra that she was save, and to vote off Candace.  Sierra said she didn’t trust what the Coach was saying for sure, but would go along with him.

So with Candace being blind-sided and voted off at Tribal Council, this has shown us that Benjamin, (known as the Coach), has extremely good abilities in the art of manipulation, and proven himself as a strong player on the Timbira Tribe.

Second Castaway Voted Off

February 19th, 2009

The 31 year old Candace from Dayton, Ohio, is the second person voted out of Survivor Tocantins.  Jeff told her, “Candace, the tribe has spoken”.  After she left, Jeff told the tribe that this is your 1st tribal council and you’re first blind-sided.  Congratulations!

Candace had to say afterwards, “I am surprised. I’m really pissed off.  I worked really hard.  I guess this more like day camp.”

The 1st Episode, Season 18, Survivor Tocantins

February 14th, 2009

Second Day!

The castaways had a busy morning setting up their respective camp sites, while thinking about their upcoming challenge later that day.  Timbira tribe ran out of water quickly, as the temperatures were rising.  So Tyson and the girls went to the river for more water.

The girls were instantly embarrassed by Tyson as he got naked to retrieve the water barrel in the river.  He explained to them that he didn’t want to get his underwear wet, as they would be doing a competition later.  He also told us on one-on-one that he would wear or do anything if it would get him to the end.

In the Jalapao tribe, Sandy would excuse herself and go look for the immunity idol again.  This is drawing comments from her fellow castaways, such as Sandy is anti-socialable, and she doesn’t like to be with other people?  But Sandy tells us one-on-one that she would be so happy to have them vote her off while she proudly hands in her idol.

The two tribes came together later that day for their first challenge.  Jeff explained that they were playing for flint (fire) and the tribe immunity idol.  It started off as a race over small sandy hills and through shallow water to a raft with puzzle planks on it for each tribe.  The raft could not be unhooked until all 6 designated runners had made it to the raft.  We saw JT make a big lead and continued way ahead of the pack.  JT could prove to be quite the competitor.

The teams had to bring all their puzzle planks back to the start of the race before proceeding to build a series of steps to the top of a platform, where 2 contestants had to solve the puzzle.  We heard Jeff mention that Carolina and Sydney were having a hard time standing up, and went on to say the heat of 120 degrees was taking it’s toll on the players.  We also see Tyson carrying back a big stack of planks, indicating that he is a very physical threat in these games.

Once all the runners were back with all of the planks, the building of the steps began.  Sandy started barking out orders for her tribe, as she quickly put up the steps.  But Sierra was also doing the same for her tribe, only much slower.  So Jalapao finished way ahead of Timbira, and were able to start working on the puzzle.  But in the end, Timbira blew through their puzzle and won the competition.

Back at the Jalapao tribe we could see people struggling with the vote.  Some were saying Sandy should not be voted off, while others were saying Carolina was too bossy and should go home.  So at the tribal counsel, Carolina was blind-sided with a majority vote to be booted off the island.  She complemented the tribe for doing so, and wished them good luck.

First Episode, Season 18, Survivor Tocantins

February 13th, 2009

New Twists To New Season!

Our long awaited Season 18 got off to a quick start, in fact so quick, that the 16 castaways were already divided into 2 tribes before the show began.  A tribe named Jalapao, in red, and the other called Timbira, in black.  The good news is that the cast was not allowed to talk to each other until the show began.

Tocantins, BrazilA brand new twist to this season was revealed shortly after the contestants unloaded their flat bed truck and were about to embark upon a 4 hour hike to their respective camps.  Jeff announced that each tribe had to instantly vote off one member!  So needless to say, panic took over as everyone was scrambling around trying to think of who to vote for.

With 5 votes counted so far, "The Old Lady" Sandy was voted off.  Jeff asked her for her comments.  Sandy said such things as ‘was so pissed" and "obviously didn’t think it would be like this." And, "we didn’t got to know each other."

Sierra was voted off by her tribe.  One comment was that she was so quiet.  But wait, let’s back up for a second.  It was announced that the castaways were asked to be silent before the show began?  So how is it that Sierra was accused of being quiet when she was doing exactly what she was told to do?  The Producers have some explaining to do here.

Anyway, Jeff asked Sierra about the vote and she said that she was "sorry, I have a fevor of 102.  I think I could of brought alot to this team.  That’s your choice, fine by me."

So then Jeff reveals another twist.  He states these 2 are not booted, but instead taken by helicopter directly to camp, and missing a 4 hour hike in the heat carrying all the supplies.  Suddenly our booted castaways were very happy!

After each person was dropped off into their camps, a note was awaiting them.  They could get back in with the tribe by starting to get things organized and built, OR, they could search for a hidden immunity idol.

Well, Sandy, who appeared very emotional and was crying at first, decided to screw the tribe and look for the idol.  This "old lady" was out to win at any cost!

But Sierra on the other hand, was very thoughtful and wanted to show her tribe how valuable she was to them.  Sierra therefore built a shelter, all by herself, for her tribe to sleep in during the first night.  So needless to say, her tribe was impressed by her actions and were having second thoughts about booting her off.

So after the castaways first day, I would have to say that it was an emotional roller coaster for some.  A victory for Sierra, and a bad decision made by Sandy.  This is going to be a very interesting season!

Goodbye Carolina

February 12th, 2009

First Castaway To Leave Survivor Tocantins

Well, we are sorry to see Carolina be the first one booted off Survivor.  She was a young, shapely lady who was eye candy to the guys, until she was called out for being winey. (Would you like some cheese with that wine?)

Survivor TV ShowThe first challenge was a race to bring back the puzzle planks, build a stair case, then climb it to release and raise the flag.  During the competition you could see that Carolina was dragging and appeared to be out of shape.

But we were thinking that Sandy would get the boot first, since she was voted out at the beginning of the show.  But since Sandy took charge of the building of the stairs in the competition, and beat the other tribe in building these stairs, which made Sandy’s value go way up as a competitive castaway.  All tribes want to win.  All tribes do not want to go to tribal counsel.  So that made people think that Carolina should go because of her mouth, as it could wear on all of the tribe over time.

This is a good lesson in how personality can make a big difference in this game.  At the end of the show, Carolina said, "I am completely blind-sided" and "pissed off" and also "embarassed".  Oh well!

How To Win Survivor Tocantins

What It Takes To Win Survivor Tocantins

The next winner of Survivor 18 will need to take a close look at Earl Cole, Winner Of Survivor: Fiji

After months of painstaking challenges and strategic alliance formations, Survivor: Fiji finally found its winner in the form of Ear Cole, the first African-American male to win Survivor and the first to win the crown with a unanimous vote. In an interview with BuddyTV, Cole talked about his Survivor journey.

cbs survivor 18Initially, he was cast for another reality program called Amazing Race. But after discovering his partner, he decided to decline his participation.

Fortunately, there was a spot available for Survivor, which he obviously took.

Upon joining Survivor: Fiji, Cole did not have a game plan in mind. And since he wasn’t really a fan of the show, he just took his time in observing and examining the people and how the game flowed. Nevertheless, he was able to perceived each person very well, labeling who was dominant, lazy, smart, and so on.

As far as alliances are concerned, Cole became very close to Yau-Man. And apart from having many things in common with him, both of them respected each other, which played a very important role in their friendship.

But despite the bond forged between him and Yao-man, Cole still had to strategize his moves in order to win Survivor. And since Yao-man was very visible, he was eventually voted off the game that led to Cole being up against Cassandra and Dre, which became highly advantageous for Cole. In the end, Cole claimed that it was every man for himself and that he had to play smart in order to end up as the sole Survivor.

Cole, a 35-year old native of Kansas City, had worked as an advertising executive prior to his inclusion on Survivor. Previously, he studied business at the University of Washington and was awarded with a National Scholastic Achievement Award. As a musician, he also became exposed to different instruments and various genres of music.

Lessons From Reality Tv: Survivor Tocantins

When Reality Shows first appeared on television they were a breath of fresh air from the same old formulaic programming that many of the networks had fallen into. Sitcoms had reaching the end of a creative cycle with the conclusion of Seinfeld, Friends, and Everybody Loves Raymond. Dramas were stagnating. The field was open for the new kid on the block.

cbs tv show survivorShows like Survivor, Amazing Race, The Bachelor and eventually The Apprentice grabbed viewers interest at an astonishing pace. The Reality Show format was so successful that not only were new ones coming out almost weekly but actors and producers of fictional shows were getting worried. As with all good things, excess spawned contempt and it wasn’t long before all reality shows were painted with the same brush.

Quality programs endured the backlash and are still going strong. They help to inform as well as entertain millions of viewers weekly. Reality Shows give us a rare glimpse into the human psyche. We see people with their guard down, openly confessing their motives, inner thoughts and feelings. More than simply catering to the voyeuristic tendencies in us all, they help enlighten us.

Survivor is the grand daddy of Reality Shows. Who will ever forget the first season when Richard Hatch played the game brilliantly and showed us how manipulation and deviousness does get rewarded? For the nave and good natured among us, the belief that people are basically honest must have been greatly shaken. What about alliances? Will people you trust always watch your back or will they place self- interest ahead of loyalty? Reality shows provide an important lesson in human nature that can pay dividends for a lifetime if taken to heart. Is Survivor just a game? Don’t believe it.

How about The Amazing Race? Here the lessons are a little different. The popularity of this award winning show has remained strong for 9 seasons. Although sometimes painfully formulaic, it gives us a broad glimpse of the world and the diversity of its people. Where else can you get a quick lesson in endurance and perseverance with so little effort? Guilty pleasure or not, The Amazing Race shows us the power of competition, the benefit of positive attitude and the grace and dignity that can be salvaged from defeat. Watching comfortably at home it may seem exciting, even easy but could your relationship withstand that level of stress? Do you see yourself in any of the racers?

You may be surprised at the number of people that take The Apprentice very seriously. Numerous blogs and websites are exclusively devoted to the business lessons gleaned from each episode. Anyone in business realizes that the situations presented aren’t always realistic. It is a television show after all with an unforgiving requirement to entertain above all else. However, business people also know that you can learn some valuable lessons from each show if you take a moment to think about it. The hope for success and the elusive search for the secret to great wealth keep people coming back week after week.

The list of benefits continues. Big Brother offers political intrigue and demonstrates the power and the folly of alliances. The American Inventor offers people a glimpse into product development and the hard work most people don’t see that goes into a great or not so great idea. Overnight success is rare.

Make no mistake. Producers and advertisers like reality shows because it gives them a new format for advertising, one where the commercials can’t easily be avoided. If you accept the fact that advertising is the price to pay for enjoying low cost entertainment, you may as well learn something about the nature of humanity in the process.
